Hey all, so this year instead of making valentines for all of my friends, I sent out a request that we all create a playlist of our 23 favorite love songs and send out that playlist to each other. Some people are making physical copies of their mixes, but some are creating playlists in Grooveshark or using other ways to share their playlists across the web. I set the deadline for this Friday, and I've already had two friends share their playlists and they are fabulous. I am so excited to see what everyone puts on their lists!

But for now, I will share with you all my playlist of 23 Love Songs, which you can listen to over here on Grooveshark. There are actually a few tracks missing here, since I couldn't find "Oh Yoko!" by John Lennon or "Benefits of Lying with Your Friends" by the Apples in Stereo on Grooveshark, but still I'm pretty pleased with it. Great Gifts Holiday Shop!

Dear friends, as usual I am terrible at posting in a timely fashion, especially lately as work picks up and so does the holiday frenzy. But oddly enough this post has to do with both work, and holiday shopping.

Sarah Carr, The Bridge, and many other tireless volunteers and organizers have pulled together an awesome month long shop (!) that will be open every day in December at The Bridge PAI, beginning this Friday, December 3rd. It will feature the work of about 40 different vendors, myself included, and I encourage everyone to go check it out. I can't wait to see all the awesome goodies up for sale!

Between prepping for this gift show, visiting the family in North Carolina, and my regular job, I have been a little distracted, but in a good way! Being busy usually means I'm surrounded by friends and social activities, and this week will be no different. A much needed ladies' knitting night tomorrow, followed by an impromptu business trip to NYC early next week (and I'll be going up a day early to visit Miss Romeo, among others). I am not ready for the new york cold, but sitting in my barely heated apartment for the next few days should be training enough. In serious need of a space heater over here, people.

I'll be away from the computer more than usual this week, because well, this is a very exciting week! My best friend from home, Kristin, and her fiance Matt will be tying the knot this Thursday here in Charlottesville at the Clifton Inn. I am so excited to be there to see them start the next phase of their life, and their wedding is sure to be as classy and wonderful as they are. Congrats you two! I'm so thankful to call you both friends!

So I have been fortunate enough to spend some quality time with my brother, his wife, and my niece and nephew lately. They live out in LA so getting to see them a lot is a bit rare, but two visits in one month! Crazy! So I was out there in LA for labor day, and we had a great time, spent 12 hours at Disneyland, played on playgrounds. You know. The usual. I also got to spend some time with my good friend Elyse who is out there getting her masters for being a totally rad animator. I went to the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory with her and her family and that was a ton of fun. Please note on that Hollywood sign shot that there is a helicopter circling as someone was in the middle of getting arrested for sitting on the "O".

I spent the last weekend down in Bristol with one miss Ginny Harr, and we had a great time catching up, cruising on a lake, and listening to tunes at the Rhythm and Roots Reunion Festival. Many great times were had, and we bounced around from performers like the Felice Brothers, Ricky Skaggs, Shotgun Party, and a few others. Most of all, I loved getting to sneak a peek into her family's life and history. Gin, I'm so glad I have you.

Starting the Archiving Process

So last thanksgiving my mom and I discovered a box at my grandmother's house full of photos and papers my great grandmother, Carrie, had saved. This women was intense about keeping things, and she even had the thank you card my dad sent her for his high school graduation gift in 1971! (This is my mom's family, but my mom and dad were dating back in high school. I love that she thought to keep the thank you card from her granddaughter's high school boyfriend.)

Anyways, the photos are great, but were just hanging out in a big box, so they have been damaged throughout the years, and I'm trying to scan them all in and do some digital touching up. I've already organized them in an album (that was my Christmas gift to my mom), but now comes the time consuming part. These need a ton of cleaning up and cropping, but here's a glimpse into the photographic awesomeness:

There has been SO much stuff going on in the last 2 months. Lost River Modern, Craft Fairs, best friends moving away. I'm sorry I've failed to document it all. There are many photos to come in the near future, and many many posts as we approach the fall and the changing seasons. The summer has just flown by.

Back from Torrey and Robby's wedding and in addition to it being incredibly beautiful it was also a great time. Weekend Adventure

So last weekend, as i mentioned before, my friends and I headed out of town to avoid the UVA graduation crowds (though we ended up having breakfast and dinner in charlottesville so I don't know if we really avoided anything). So after much consideration, we went to Staunton. I hadn't been there before, and we all wanted to go to Blackfriar's, which is the playhouse for the American Shakespeare Center, so we went for an afternoon performance of Romeo & Juliet. (This would incidentally lead me to purchasing Romeo+Juliet yesterday for dirt cheap at target)

The play was awesome and I definitely recommend going to see something at Blackfriar's if you haven't before. But before and after the show, we just wondered around downtown Staunton, which was a little quiet since it was Sunday. But overall it was a great time, as you can see.

And it's graduation weekend here in Charlottesville, the time once a year when every hotel is full and unless you are partaking in the festivities, leaving the house is not a very desirable option. I'm heading to Lost River Modern in West Virginia for 4th of July this year with a very special group of friends and I could not be more excited. Lots of good food, outdoor activities, bad movie watching and general awesome time having will be going down. So I'm not really one for big expensive purchases. I bought myself boots this year and that was a struggle to spend $70 and I've never spent more than $40 on a bag...and usually I spend less. This usually means that I spend more money on multiple cheap things, sometimes things that don't last very long. So in an attempt to invest in more quality merchandise, and to indulge in my love love love for Jeffrey Campbell shoes, I purchased these. At $70 off it was hard to say no.

I Killed the Monster (Midnight Music Musings)

The Daniel Johnston tribute album "I Killed the Monster" was released in 2006, and while many of the covers are of note, it's the Daniel Smith and Sufjan Stevens rendition of "Worried Shoes" that always keeps me coming back. I couldn't track down a video for it, but you can give it a listen over here. In addition to being an awesome song, I just love how much the voice of the wacky Daniel Smith just works perfectly. There is also a moment in the Danielson Famile documentary where Daniel and Daniel meet, that is just great.

So I popped in Strand last weekend and purchased Summer Blonde. I always end up getting an Adrian Tomine related product when I hit up Strand (postcards, journals, graphic novels...love it all), and I almost couldn't resist the new Strand tote bag that Tomine designed.

James, Ashley and I went up to new york this weekend to visit friends, and did a lot of fooding and roaming around the city. I got to hit up a lot of great restaurants (like Jadis with Dianne, Carly, and Travis), drink amazing coffee every morning (mmmm Gorilla Coffeeee), and checked out Greenwich Letterpress. So fun. We had yet another massive snow storm here in Charlottesville. I'm starting to wonder if this whole town was magically transported about 20 degrees north and someone just forgot to tell me. I guess I would have just liked enough warning so i could order some clothing from 66 degrees north or something.

So I'm back, (yes, Rachel, just cause you asked) and a month into 2010 I'm starting to get back to my normal life. I spent a good chunk of my day listening to a Belle & Sebastian concert on NPR today. It was Mar 6, 2006 at the 930 club with the New Pornographers, and while I was not at that particular show, I did see them two days earlier at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia. It was at that show that I bought one of my most prized pieces of artwork.

Starting a New Project

So, I'm dogsitting for the next few weeks, for one of my closest friends while she's off in italy teaching, and I love the feeling of taking on a new life when you are staying in someone else's home. This has prompted me to start a new little project. So far it doesn't have very many rules or guidelines, a name, or even really a purpose, I'm just doing it. So I'm planning to leave my computer behind each evening, and spend my time dogsitting without the distraction of the internet. I'm planning on cooking every night, rather than eating out, or eating prepared or frozens meals. And I plan to just spend a lot more time alone, with the company of animals as my exception, reading books, watching tv, listening to music, doing a lot of nothing. This may not last, and I may give in and bring my computer, but right now i feel like it's the perfect detox i need.

So, Christmas is finally over, and while I love the holidays, I love the feeling I get right after christmas when i know that there is NOTHING i need to prepare for. It can get pretty stressful, and I love being able to kick back and relax. Now it's time to spend some time on myself. Which means painting my nails, buying some boots, and drooling over this rachel comey bag at urban outfitters. It's pretty darn cute.

Holiday Cards (and a few others!) now at O'Suzannah!

Dear friends, I now have a few apocketnovel cards up for sale at O'Suzannah, my favorite-est of favorite shops. There you can find both of my Christmas cards, and a few other notes like the "I Like You (A Lot)" and the "Happy Birthday (I Didn't Forget)" Elephant card. I know at least one card has sold so far, so I'm feeling good about this move into my first retail location! The last week has certainly been a whirlwind as far as this venture goes!

So you all may be wondering why I have been completely neglectful of the blog, but I have been crafting away here in my apartment, preparing for the Charlottesville Holiday Craft Fair this weekend. Dozens of vendors from around the region will be gathering this Friday and Saturday in Downtown Charlottesville with plenty of goodies for Christmas gifts, or just a treat for yourself.

You can find me there on Saturday, Dec. 5th, at the Southern (formerly Gravity Lounge) from 10am-5pm. (Sadly I won't be able to make it to the Friday show.)

Shoe Crazy

I've been going a little shoe crazy in the last few weeks, on a dedicated hunt to replenish my winter footwear collection (seeing as my my current collection consists of one pair of pumps, one pair of flats, and a pair of boots that are begging to be retired). I have long been accumulating up a list of buildings to go see whenever i should end up in switzerland, and i think I might add this one to the pile. "Evolver is a wooden construction build by 2nd year students from the ALICE Studio at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. When you walk through it, you’ll make a 720° turn and have an amazing panorama on the surroundings of Zermatt." Also it looks like it was made with popsicle sticks

Autumn Traditions: Apple Picking

Kristin and Matt came into town in Sunday, and we went to Carter Mountain to take part in our favorite autumn tradition: Apple Picking. Cider slushies, apple donuts, apple butter, and those greater apple scooper thingies all made the day fabulous. And don't forget about the view.

My brother and sis-in-law just posted pictures of my niece trying on her Halloween costume. I'm sorry but she is just too cute for words.

Also a big congrats to my brother, who was one of the Hair & Cloth Animators for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Very funny movie and #1 in the Box Office!! Good job, brother!

So the Bizarre Market at the Richmond Visual Arts Center was a moderate success. I didn't sell as much as I would have liked, but the vibe of the show was great and I raised visibility and learned a lot from this first show. Most importantly I got to be among so fabulous artists, like clothing and jewelry designer Amie Cunningham and her line Thief & Bandit. I scored a beautiful beadband (photos to come) but her feathery and bold prints and fabric necklaces are really awesome.

A New England Weekend

So I just got back from of bit of a whirlwind adventure up to New England with Gin, James and Taylor. Picking up Ginny in New Haven, sailing in Newport, walking around Boston with our friend Nick, and then to Brooklyn for a quick hello to Joe before coming back to Charlottesville. We all live in different states pretty much, so this vacation was a rarity.

A wonderful and beautiful four days with a non-stop repeat of Michael Jackson and Vampire Weekend during the 20-ish hours of driving. The actions of this weekend I think are pretty well summed up in this video:

One year of blogging

So today is my 365th day of blogging. Blogging birthday. Blog Anniversary. Whatever you want to call it. This blog has definitely been a great little project, and I hope to continue to refine it in the future. You know maybe even (here come the goals) 1) attempt to post everyday M-F and weekends if I'm feeling adventurous; 2) develop more defined blog "themes"; 3) find a way to bring more of my own personal projects into the blog.

So, we'll see what happens over the next year of this little bloggy blog. For now I'm going to go snuggle on the couch with my kitten and watch Michael & Michael. XO

So a handful of my good friends who are all up in new york are working on Aurora, the new project by Future Cities Lab, aka Nataly Gattegno and Jason Johnson, our former professors at the UVA Arch School.

Here's the project brief from their website:

The Aurora Project is an index of shifting territorial resources in the Arctic and a speculative vision for a massive new energy infrastructure and settlement pattern. Aurora suggests an alternative approach to the exploration, exploitation and eventual colonization of the region. It is simultaneously a projection of an imminent environmental condition, and the materialization of how contemporary political, social and ecological trends might be channeled towards a more productive future.

The Aurora installation on view in the Van Alen Institute gallery superimposes the ephemeral qualities of the Arctic ice field with the dynamic behavior of visitors, translating the shifting dimensions of the ice into an immersive system of flickering auroras and responsive luminescent skins. Presented alongside Aurora is a map room (“Terra Incognita”) consisting of original drawings, diagrams and other materials that provide a view into how the Arctic region has been represented, claimed, and mythologized in the past and present. A smaller interactive instrument (“The Glaciarium”) engages visitors’ senses through the sight and sound of a melting ice core

The move into the new apartment is complete. But without working internet, or a couch, and the fact that I haven't unpacked any of my clothes, I'm feeling like I still have a lonnnng ways to go. I am however, already enjoying the benefits of popping across the street to say hello to my good friends R&H and I'm looking forward to adopting my new kitty tomorrow. Her name is scotch. She is the sweetest. And tomorrow she moves in. Pictures of her adorableness to follow.
For tonight, though, I'm dogsitting the sopher and using Jessica's internet. Until I get Comcast to come out, posts may continue to be infrequent. It's times like this I would really just LOVE to have a laptop. Sigh.

Friday Video - "Sleeping Lessons" Zune Commercial

Well, this is more of a Friday/Saturday video, but my life has been overtaken my packing, feeling overwhelmed, and preparing for a weekend full of appointments and social events like CLAW (!!!). I really love this song from The Shins' third album "Wincing the Night Away," and I think that this Zune Commercial did such a great job of using the song to sell their product. Commercials are really great sometimes.

Speaking of commercials, here's a video bonus. This Adidas commercial, directed by Spike Jonze, is from years ago, but I still love it. The sequences mixed with the vocals of the lovely Karen O make this one a classic as far as "music commercials" go.

Our garden is out of control

Without a doubt the thing I will miss most about where I live now is that I have a HUGE backyard, full of roses and a veggie garden and a lovely little patio. Today I went outside to my veggie garden to pick the first ripened tomatoes. Now, I think you all should know I've never planted anything before these tomatoes. This was a gardening first. And I honestly didn't think they were going to get to be taller than a few inches. They are now huge and are too big for the stakes I set up and they have broken through their ties and overtaken the whole garden. My eggplant are still sticking it out through the tomato empire, but needless to say things are a bit of a mess. I wasn't ready for this...or for the insane amount of rain we had this season that led my tomatoes to grow despite my lack of gardening skills.

Roots

I've been working on compiling a family tree. Recently I found a copy of a book that my great grandmother, Carrie, filled out about 15 years ago, before her death, that prompted her with lots of questions about her life, and which has served as a window into the life of a really amazing woman. In one of the pages, she filled in a family tree going back to her great grandparents, and it totally fascinated me.

So now, I'm making an effort to track down more information. There is something very basic about needing to know where you come from. I feel like technology is going to make it easy for our generation to be "remembered" through photographs and digitized information. It makes me sad that already so much information about my relatives has been lost, their birthdates, their birthplaces, the names of their siblings.

The next step, obviously, will be deciding how to display and catalog this information, and I'm struggling with a workable design for a family tree. This is about to sound very cheesy, but I've been Harry Pottering lately, and I wish I could have a huge tapestry filled with all the faces and names of my relatives, reaching out and covering an entire wall. I really do love the idea of that.

I still have a few more weeks before moving day, but I'm feeling like I need to get a jump on things or else I'll just be so unorganized that everything will be a complete disaster. Also, I've been shuffling my belongings around this town for 5 years, and this is the first time that I've actually made a effort to sift through it all and get rid of things. Despite my efforts, the suitcases and stuff just keeps piling up. How do people do this without all the stress? How did my mom and dad manage to move us every three years when I was growing up and not go completely nuts or just decide to throw EVERYTHING away? If anyone has any moving tips, please oh please let me know.

Furniture Makeover

I have been given a lot of furniture over the years, and a lot of it was in need of some revamping. I recently painted my desk chair and sanded down the edges and added some pink birdies on the back. It definitely was an improvement, especially since I have a lot of mismatched wood furniture in a number of different shades. I'm also in the process of refinishing my dresser. Photos to come!

Let's talk about distance

I feel like I've come a long way in the last few days, and while YES I have travelled from one far side of the country to the other, and YES, I have found myself on any number of forms of transportation, I still feel like those distances seem pretty insignificant. Sometimes it seems harder and farther just to get myself out of bed and into the shower. Or to get myself to write down my thoughts that have to travel all the way from my head.
